Walden and Civil Disobedience are two philosophical texts from acclaimed transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau. In Walden, Thoreau details his thoughts as he comes to understand the rules of society through a period of introspection whilst living alone in a cabin near Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts. Civil Disobedience, however, is a short essay that asserts the need for people to look to themselves for answers and not their government. Both dealing with the benefits of a simpler and more responsible life, Thoreau pushed for self-suffiency and a deeper understanding of the self.
