First published in 1812, Rapunzel is an adaptation of a classic German fairy tale. In the story, a man steals rapunzel (a type of wildflower translated into English as rampion) from the yard of an evil witch, giving the plant to his pregnant wife who craves it. When he is caught, the witch agrees to show mercy, on the condition that she be given the baby after birth.
The girl, Rapunzel, grows up to be incredibly beautiful, with flowing locks of golden hair. Locked in a tower in the woods, Rapunzel must let down her golden hair for anyone to visit. The ending of the story varies depending on the version of the fairy tale you read—some are quite happy, while others are grim. Rapunzel recently gained fame thanks to Disney’s animated movie version, Tangled.
