First appearing in published literature in the early 1700s, Jack and Beanstalk remains one of the most popular children’s stories to this day. Although there are several versions of the fairy tale, they all share a few common plot points and themes: a young, poor boy goes to the market to sell his family’s only cow, only to exchange the cow for a bag of magic beans. The mother throws the beans on the ground in anger, only to discover that a giant beanstalk has grown the next day.
This fairy tale made famous the well-known poem:
Fee-fi-fo-fum!
I smell the blood of an English man:
Be he alive, or be he dead,
I’ll grind his bones to make my bread.
Jack climbs the beanstalk several times and finds untold riches, including a magic harp and a goose that lays golden eggs. He steals these treasures from the sleeping giant, and despite some turmoil, eventually lives happily ever after with his mother. The “Jack” of this story is the archetypal “every boy” common to many English fairy tales.
